Harmony House

This place gives you the creeps pretty much the moment you walk in. Perhaps it's the fact that the beds are made, or that everything looks very lived-in. Perhaps it's the number of personal belongings scattered everywhere that you can't imagine anyone leaving without. Perhaps it's something else.

Martin Mill

At the moment, the history I've been able to find is a little sketchy. Apparently, sometime prior to 1960, Hay and Company opened this mill. It was later sold to Weldwood Veneer, and finally purchased by Martin Veneer.

St. Hubert Mission Church

This little country church is off the beaten path. Though located right in town, you'd be hard pressed to find it unless you were looking for it.

St. Joseph's Girls Indian Residential School

The Government of Canada began a program of assimilation of the native population. To this end, many schools were opened, mostly by religious entities, across the country. These schools would teach English culture to native children and weed out their own language and way of life.

Millbrook Correctional Centre

Opened in 1957, Millbrook Correctional Centre became the Ontario Government's only maximum security facility. It would also see a significant amount of trouble during its 46 years of service.

Ross Mine

In operation between 1934 and 1988, Ross Mine produced over 1 million ounces of gold. It was owned, at closing, by Pamour Porcupine Mines, Ltd.

Orenda Engines

This is the site of the Orenda Engines factory. It was originally part of the CIL Munitions plant across the highway, but in 1949 became the home of testing for Canada's earliest jet engines.

Depot Harbour

Once a very important shipping port in the Great Lakes, and the westernmost point of the Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway, Depot Harbour is now little more than some concrete ruins hidden among the trees.

Kanichee Mine

The Kanichee Mine, also known as the Ajax Mine, is an abandoned base metal and precious metal mine with a history dating back to 1910. Throughout the 20th century, the mine experienced several periods of operation and closure, with the most recent activity occurring from 1973 to 1976.

Whitefish Falls Hydro Electric Dam

I had heard about this place before, but wasn't completely sure as to its exact whereabouts. One afternoon, while driving to Manitoulin Island, I finally caught a glimpse of it off the embankment as I crossed the bridge.
